The classrooms are ready and today is the first day of school. There are still 3 rooms that need to be put back together: the tech lab, the art room, and this room, our library.

As soon as our library shelves are bolted back onto the walls, we can get the books onto the shelves and arrange our furniture. Until then, Ms. Annie Watson and Ms. Ellen Hanson will be working in the library ordering books, cleaning our shelving, and continuing to get us ready to open.

We might need some extra hands shelving books when the time comes, so if you're interested in helping, call Annie at school. Northern Orioles, red-winged blackbirds, meadow larks, and of course robins are all serenading us. Outside my bedroom window, the starlings continue to rear their young in the holes of a giant Eastern Cottonwood tree. Chokecherry trees are blooming. Choke berry is about to bloom (it's a native shrub), as is honeysuckle.

Pear and apple trees are blossoming in New Haven. I'm keeping an eye out for pollinating honey bees on them. Speaking of which, the bees are still working the ground ivy. Mustard is coming out now too, a big source of nectar for bees.

Wild strawberries (and cultivated!) are flowering, alerting us to those special spots where we will go to gather tiny bursts of sweetness in June.

Be sure to get out in the woods and enjoy the multitudes of flowers and birds. There are many field guides available help identify them. See the list (top right) for a few titles.

Watch out for porcupines and opossums on the road at night -- too many are being hit by cars.

Winding down the year

The end of the year approacheth...and it is earlier this year.
