Books and Spring

The other day a flock of bobolinks bubbled along the hedgerow as I walked down to Lewis Creek after school. Northern Orioles, red-winged blackbirds, meadow larks, and of course robins are all serenading us. Outside my bedroom window, the starlings continue to rear their young in the holes of a giant Eastern Cottonwood tree. Chokecherry trees are blooming. Choke berry is about to bloom (it's a native shrub), as is honeysuckle.

Pear and apple trees are blossoming in New Haven. I'm keeping an eye out for pollinating honey bees on them. Speaking of which, the bees are still working the ground ivy. Mustard is coming out now too, a big source of nectar for bees.

Wild strawberries (and cultivated!) are flowering, alerting us to those special spots where we will go to gather tiny bursts of sweetness in June.

Be sure to get out in the woods and enjoy the multitudes of flowers and birds. There are many field guides available help identify them. See the list (top right) for a few titles.

Watch out for porcupines and opossums on the road at night -- too many are being hit by cars.

Winding down the year

The end of the year approacheth...and it is earlier this year. Because of the building project we are closing the library a week early. We have over 8,000 items in our library! All of our books, videos, maps, and EVERYTHING must be packed up and stored over the summer. Click here
for our end-of-year calendar.

Fifth graders Henry (left), Travis, and Colby were in this afternoon, and we talked about books we like. Henry's favorite right now is Powder Monkey by Paul Dowswell. Colby likes the Guinness Book of World Records, and Travis enjoyed Guts by Gary Paulsen.

Bookmark display

I recently brought in all the bookmarks I have collected over the years, and put them up on our Library Gallery bulletin board. Come take a look!
